HP Pavilion applications for the Internet Explorer Security Patch. This patch addresses four security issues found on various HP Pavilion PC models. These issues allow a way for a malicious Web page to take advantage of a "back door" which exists in pre-installed Active-X components (OCXs). p>
SystemWizard security issues: SystemWizard contains an Active-X control which allows it to run executable files (EXE). Originally intended to run the HP Help Support Center, this control can actually be used to run any executable. The security patch modifies this control so that only HP Help can be run. SystemWizard also has a second control which can read and write the user's registry. This security patch removes that control from the system. That control is no longer necessary since the control is now programmed directly to the path of HP Help. issue: The HP Pavilion's active desktop allows you to launch EXEs from hyperlinks. The HPSOCSC.OCX control allows this; however, with the older 1,6,0,0 version, any Web page could use this control to launch an EXE on the user's system. This patch installs version 2,2,0,0 of this control, which will only launch an EXE if the HTML is running on the desktop or within our application
Encompass security issue: The Encompass browser provided a way to pre-populate the registration form using data the customer previously entered during HP Pavilion PC registration. Even if a customer never connects their system to a phone line, but rather through a LAN to the Internet, a WEB page could make use of the Encompass control to read the user's name and addresses used during HP Pavilion PC registration. For this condition, if this patch determines the user never connected to the Internet via a dial-up networking connection, the patch advises the user to uninstall "Easy Internet Access."
