SystemWizard security issues: SystemWizard contains an Active-
control which allows it to run executable files (EXE). Originall
intended to run the HP Help Support Center, this control ca
actually be used to run any executable. The security patch modifie
this control so that only HP Help can be run. SystemWizard also ha
a second control which can read and write the user's registry. Thi
security patch removes that control from the system. That contro
is no longer necessary since the control is now programmed directl
to the path of HP Help. Note, these updates can also be retrieve
from the SystemSoft site: http:/­/­www.systemsoft.com/­ HP contro
security issue: The HP Pavilion's active desktop allows you t
launch EXEs from hyperlinks. The HPSOCSC.OCX control allows this
however, with the older 1,6,0,0 version, any Web page could us
this control to launch an EXE on the user's system. This patc
installs version 2,2,0,0 of this control, which will only launch a
EXE if the HTML is running on the desktop or within ou
application.

Encompass security issue: The Encompass browser provided a wa
to pre-populate the registration form using data the custome
previously entered during HP Pavilion PC registration. Even if
customer never connects their system to a phone line, but rathe
through a LAN to the Internet, a WEB page could make use of th
Encompass control to read the user's name and addresses used durin
HP Pavilion PC registration. For this condition, if this patc
determines the user never connected to the Internet via a dial-u
networking connection, the patch advises the user to uninstal
"Easy Internet Access."
